Historical Uses
The Kukui seeds were brought by the ancient Polynesians during the earliest known exploration of the archipelago and arrived on the Hawaiian islands some 1600 years ago. Due to its many traditional uses and its cultural importance, the kukui tree is recognized as the official tree of the State of Hawai’ i. It is also known as, “Candlenut Tree,” as the oil was burnt in lamps.
Ancient Hawaiians used the oil to dye and waterproof their canoes. In their evolving culture the kukui tree was used extensively; the seeds fed to hogs on their ocean journey, bark infusion for preserving fishing nets, fuelwood, sap for tapa cloth, different parts of the tree for medicine, dye for tattooing, nuts for ornamental leis, oil for light, animal fodder from the remaining seed cake (after removal of the oil) and for ceremonial and religious purposes.
A kukui nut tree usually produces 60-180 lbs of nuts. The nuts inside the shells are removed and the oil is obtained after roasting and hard-pressing the kernels. The nuts yield approximately 20% of their weight in oil. Hawaiian babies were anointed with the oil as protection from sun and salt, wind and other elements. It was a massage oil for royalty who were indulged with massage marathons of 7 hours or more!!! Hawaiians treated skin irritations, wounds and burns with the oil and for easing stretch marks. It is used for Lorni Lomi massage and in Hawaiian Healing.
Current Uses & Benefits
Today, refined oil is considered the most valuable extract from this tree and it has recently become known for it’s skin rejuvenating properties to the world outside Hawaii.
Awareness about the immense benefits of this oil is gradually increasing. In Hawaii, hospitals use Kukui Nut Oil to treat cancer patients suffering from radiation treatment burns. It is very popular among surfers who use it as a skin emollient against sun, wind, water, and sea salt damage.
Why Kukui Nut Oil is so beneficial?
In skin care Kukui Nut Oil is a luxuriant, versatile and precious oil. It has antioxidant properties, which prevent free radical cell damage. It is high in polyunsaturated, high in essential fatty acids, both Omega-6 (linoleic acid) and Omega-3 (linolenic acid). Omega-3 has long been known to have both hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties.
Methods of Use
There are two methods of using linolenic acids for your skin; you can either apply them topically and/or you can add Omega-3 rich foods to your diet to get results from the inside out. We strongly recommend both. Flaxseed Oil contains the highest amount of Omega-3 fatty acids. Take one or 2 table-spoons daily and reduce the intake of foods rich in saturated fats.
Kukui Nut Oil for topical use penetrates deeply into the stratum corneum and slows trans-epidermal water loss therefore being an excellent moisturizer. The trapping of moisture in the skin allows it to heal. It helps heal chemical burns, radiation burns and sunburn. It softens scar tissue, cracked skin and helps many who suffer from psoriasis and eczema. Omega-3 has been shown to reduce the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays. While it should not be used instead of sunblock, it is a helpful supplement to protect your skin from sun damage. Omega-3 can also plump and firm the skin so that wrinkles are less pronounced. This oil acts as an excellent exfoliator, getting rid of dead skin cells and helping to regenerate new ones. Linolenic acids naturally fight inflammation thereby leading to reduction of acne symptoms.
Amino acids present in this oil are helpful for treating damaged hair and scalp. It makes one of the best hair and scalp oils. For best results, it is recommended that people suffering from dull and unhealthy hair, massage Kukui Nut Oil onto the scalp because it acts as a conditioner and helps hair to regain lost moisture, protects against split ends, and works as a stimulating agent on scalp for hair growth. It also checks the growth of dandruff and soothes dry, itchy scalps. You can also add the oil into the bath, or after a shower put the oil on your body while you are still wet. One of it’s great qualities is its fast absorption time. It moisturizes and softens very well, but does not leave an oil slick. People have reported that Kukui Nut Oil may help reduce scarring when applied to scrapes and abrasions.
This oil has numerous health benefits, so be sure to include it in your daily skin care regimen to get a glowing, vibrant skin.

We were buying a bottle of the Kukui nut oil (from different brand), every time we were in Hawaii, and it was enough for us to have it until next anual Hawaiian trip. Last month my hubby went alone for the first time on the Big Island and couldn’t find that brand oil. But instead, he found Alohatherapy oil at the little shop in Hilo… and although he still bought it, he was upset, by not finding “our” brand. The salesperson gave him a flyer for Kamani oil, but Luc didn’t pay much attention to it until he was on the plane back home. So, already from home, we tried your Kukui Nut Oil and yes, I LIKE IT A LOT. It was soooo much better than the previous oil we were buying year after year.
