Geranium Flower

Geranium essential oil  is a beautiful, floral essential oil often referred to as “the poor man’s rose oil” for it’s similar properties and uses.

Geranium essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the plant’s stems and leaves. There are over 700 varieties of cultivated geranium and pelargonium plants; many are grown for ornamental purposes in the garden.  Pelargonium graveolens is the main species cultivated for essential oil.  The ancient Egyptians used Geranium oil to beautify skin.   It got introduced to Europe in the late 17th century and became real popular during the Victorian era.

In Aromatherapy  Geranium oil is used to lift the spirit and heal feelings of unworthiness. It eases nervous tension and releases negative emotions and memories.    The essential oil lessens fatigue and promotes emotional wellness.

Geranium is a strong regulator of the female hormonal system.  It stimulates the brain’s adrenal cortex, a primary regulator of hormones secreted by other organs including male and female sex hormones. This aspect makes geranium useful to treat unstable hormonal balance indicated by PMS and menopausal problems, for which it is especially helpful.

Geranium oil also functions to reduce pain and inflammation. Its antiseptic properties can help speed up the healing of wounds and treat a variety of skin problems, such as burns, frostbite, fungal infections, athlete’s foot, and eczema.

It is used traditionally to support the circulatory and nervous systems, a great deal of its strength lies in its ability to revitalize body tissues.   It causes your gums, muscles, intestines, skin, blood vessel and tissues to contract due to its astringent properties. It is helpful for  skin problems like sagging and wrinkling.

Frequent travelers can use geranium oil as a natural insect repellent. Topical application can also help heal insect bites and stop itching. It may also be used as a massage oil to relieve aching muscles and stress.

It can serve as a deodorant due to its fragrant scent and it is fighting body odors due to its antibacterial action.
